Seldom has a government-backed savings institution confronted such intense scrutiny over its stewardship of public funds. National Savings and Investments, the UK's Treasury-backed savings provider, has revealed that approximately £217 million lies dormant in forgotten ISA accounts. These tax-free savings vehicles have been left untouched by their holders, often for years. The disclosure arrives at a particularly inopportune moment for the institution, which already faces reputational damage.
NS&I holds more than £240 billion on behalf of over 24 million customers across the United Kingdom. Its product range includes Premium Bonds, savings certificates, and cash ISAs, all carrying a full government guarantee. Yet the revelation of £217 million in neglected ISA holdings suggests a systemic gap in customer engagement. When savers lose track of accounts, the accumulated interest benefits neither the individual nor the broader economy.
The forgotten ISA problem exists within a wider pattern of dormant financial assets across Britain. Between 2022 and 2025, over £557 million was transferred into the Treasury's Dormant Assets Scheme from 4.4 million inactive accounts. Meanwhile, NS&I reunited more than £166 million with 52,693 account holders during the 2024-25 financial year alone. These figures illustrate both the scale of the challenge and the potential for remediation through proactive tracing initiatives.
Compounding NS&I's difficulties is a separate bereavement scandal that has severely undermined institutional credibility. The provider acknowledged operational failures spanning from 2008 to 2025 that left £367 million owed to approximately 34,000 bereaved estates. Its chief executive resigned, and an interim replacement was appointed to oversee what constitutes the largest repayment exercise in NS&I's history. Such institutional shortcomings erode the fiduciary trust upon which public savings bodies fundamentally depend.
Financial advisers now urge savers to conduct periodic audits of all their accounts, including dormant holdings. The free tracing service My Lost Account enables individuals to locate forgotten savings without incurring any fees. Experts emphasise that maintaining updated contact details with providers is the most effective preventive measure. In an era of proliferating financial products, vigilance over one's portfolio has never been more consequential.
