Apple has officially announced the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max. The unveiling took place at the company's "Surprise and Shine" event on September 9, 2026. This was the first major product launch under new CEO John Ternus. He succeeded Tim Cook, who now serves as executive chairman. The event signaled a significant shift in Apple's strategic direction.
The new devices feature Apple's first 2-nanometer chip, the A20 Pro. This processor delivers up to 40 percent faster graphics performance. A variable aperture camera is the headline innovation in the upgraded system. Battery life has also improved dramatically, with up to 45 hours of video playback. Both models now offer storage options up to 2 terabytes.
Apple has increased prices by $100 compared to the previous generation. The iPhone 18 Pro starts at $1,199, while the Pro Max begins at $1,299. Analysts attribute the price hike partly to a global memory chip shortage. Apple has reportedly negotiated deals with suppliers to absorb rising component costs. The standard iPhone 18 will not launch until spring 2027.
Ternus has positioned the iPhone as the core of Apple's AI strategy. He stated that no product is better designed to be an intelligent hub. This approach contrasts with Tim Cook's effort to diversify beyond the iPhone. If Apple invested less in its flagship device, the company would risk losing market dominance. Industry analysts say Ternus must sustain momentum while preparing for future disruption.
