If you have ever stayed at an Airbnb, you know the checkout routine. Many guests have been asked to strip beds and wash dishes. Some hosts even required travelers to take garbage offsite. For years, guests have complained about these excessive demands. Now, Airbnb has announced a major policy change.
Under the updated rules, hosts can no longer require time-consuming cleaning tasks. Guests will not be asked to do laundry or put away dishes. However, simple requests are still permitted by the company. For example, hosts can ask guests to place dishes in the sink. They can also ask visitors to gather used towels.
The new policy takes effect for reservations booked on or after November 20. All house rules must be disclosed before a guest books a stay. Hosts cannot add surprise requirements through messages or signs afterward. If a host violates the policy, Airbnb will flag the issue. Repeated violations could reduce a listing's visibility in search results.
Not everyone is pleased with these changes, though. Some hosts have expressed concern about rising cleaning costs between stays. Others worry that the policy makes Airbnb feel too much like a hotel. Still, many travelers have welcomed the update as a fairer approach. The debate highlights the ongoing challenge of balancing guest and host expectations.
