Something amazing happened in Egypt today! The ground started shaking early in the morning. An earthquake happened near the city of Suez. People in Cairo felt it too. The shaking even reached other countries far away!
The earthquake was quite strong. Scientists say it was about 5.3 in magnitude. It happened 10 kilometers under the ground. That is a shallow earthquake. Shallow ones can be felt over large areas.
So why does the ground shake? Earth has big pieces called plates. These plates move very slowly all the time. Sometimes they push against each other. When that happens, the ground shakes!
