Big storms come every summer and fall. They are called hurricanes. Hurricanes have very strong wind and rain. But this year is different. The ocean is very calm!
Scientists looked at the ocean water. They found warm water far away. This warm water is called El Niño. El Niño makes strong wind up high. The high wind stops storms from growing.
Only five small storms came this year. Not one became a hurricane! That is a new record. Scientists are happy and surprised. The ocean is quiet like a sleeping cat!
