Water levels in Kocaeli, Türkiye, have shown a remarkable recovery this year. The Yuvacık Dam, which supplies water to about 1.5 million people, has reached 88% capacity. This is a significant achievement because the dam started 2026 at only 3%. Heavy rainfall and snowfall in the mountains contributed to this rapid increase. The recovery has been described as extraordinary by local authorities.

According to official data, the dam now holds nearly 45 million cubic metres of water. Its total capacity is 51 million cubic metres. At the same time last year, the dam was only 65% full. Another important reservoir, Namazgah Dam, has also reached 75% capacity. Both dams are essential for drinking water and industrial use in the region.

This positive development follows a period of serious drought across Türkiye. In late 2025, many cities reported dangerously low water reserves. Experts warned that water supplies could become critical without sufficient rainfall. Fortunately, winter and spring rains have reversed the situation in Kocaeli. The region's water security has improved considerably as a result.

However, authorities have emphasised that water conservation remains important. If residents reduced their daily water use, reserves would last even longer. Summer months typically bring higher consumption and less rainfall. Experts believe that sustainable water management is essential for long-term security. Citizens are encouraged to use water responsibly despite the current positive outlook.
