Imagine spending an entire day inside an airplane. That is about to become reality. Qantas, Australia's national airline, is launching Project Sunrise. These nonstop flights will connect Sydney to London and New York. The journey will cover over 10,000 miles and last up to 22 hours. It will become the longest commercial flight in the world.
The name Project Sunrise has a fascinating origin. It refers to secret World War II flights that lasted so long. Passengers on those flights witnessed two sunrises during the journey. Qantas first announced this ambitious plan back in 2017. After years of delays caused by the pandemic, flights should begin in October 2027.
To make this possible, Qantas ordered twelve specially modified Airbus A350 aircraft. Each plane will carry only 238 passengers, far fewer than usual. This gives everyone more personal space on the long flight. The cabin includes a dedicated Wellbeing Zone for stretching and movement. Special lighting helps passengers adjust to the destination's time zone.
Some people wonder if passengers would actually prefer such a long nonstop flight. However, Qantas tested a similar route from Perth to London successfully. Many travelers said they preferred avoiding a layover in the middle. If you had the chance, would you endure 22 hours in the air?
