Many people share their bank account numbers online every day. They send their IBAN to friends, clients, or even strangers. But could this simple act get you into legal trouble? A Turkish lawyer named Büşra Kocaman recently addressed this common concern. She explained that sharing your IBAN is not a crime on its own.
However, the real danger is not someone taking money out. The risk comes when criminals deposit illegal money into your account. Scammers often use other people's accounts to hide stolen funds. They may ask the account holder to withdraw the cash later. If this happens, the account holder becomes part of a crime.
Kocaman warned that young people are especially vulnerable to these schemes. Some students lend their accounts for a small commission. They believe they are doing something harmless, but they are wrong. Saying you did not know about the crime is not a valid defense. Once illegal funds pass through your account, you could face serious consequences.
Experts suggest several ways to protect yourself from these risks. You should only share your banking details with people you trust. If you notice unexpected deposits, contact your bank immediately. Setting up alerts and monitoring your account regularly can also help. Being cautious with your financial information is always the wisest approach.
