French multinational Danone has reached a landmark agreement to acquire Huel for close to one billion euros. Huel, founded in 2015, specializes in plant-based meal replacements and nutritional products. The acquisition aligns with Danone's Renew strategy, which had been designed to restore long-term growth. This deal represents a pivotal moment for both companies in the functional nutrition sector.

Huel reported £214 million in revenue and £13.8 million in pre-tax profit during 2024. The company employs approximately 300 people and operates across Europe and North America. Its products, which are now stocked in over 25,000 retail locations, include powders and ready-to-drink meals. Had Danone not pursued this acquisition, a rival firm could have captured this fast-growing market.

The complete nutrition market was estimated at $5.9 billion in 2025 with projected annual growth of 6.5 percent. Rising demand has been driven by health-conscious consumers and the increased use of weight-loss medications. Danone, which generated €27.3 billion in sales in 2025, aims to leverage its global infrastructure. The company's CEO stated that Huel's positioning resonates with Danone's mission of delivering health through food.

Analysts note that Huel's strong brand and digital capabilities may justify the premium valuation. The deal underscores a broader consolidation trend in the global nutrition and wellness market. Shares in Danone edged slightly lower following the announcement, reflecting investor caution over integration risks. Nevertheless, this acquisition could strengthen Danone's portfolio while positioning it to capture significant market share.
