A bold new strategy is disrupting the traditional film industry. Comedians Theo Von and David Spade have co-written an independent comedy called Busboys. Rather than seeking a Hollywood studio deal, they are self-distributing the film. Their talent management agency, Night Media, has executive produced the project. The film will premiere in Cinemark and Regal theaters on April 17, 2026.

The movie follows two friends attempting to succeed while working as restaurant busboys. It was directed by Jonah Feingold, who had previously directed films like EXmas. Notably, the film was shot during the Palisades Fire in 2025. The trailer, hosted on Von's YouTube channel, quickly garnered approximately 250,000 views. Von's podcast alone generates around 20 million monthly views on YouTube.

This venture builds on a precedent established by other digital creators. YouTuber Markiplier's self-distributed film Iron Lung had grossed over 50 million dollars. Night Media, a Dallas-based agency renowned for managing YouTube star MrBeast, acquired The Roost podcast network. That acquisition brought Von under their corporate umbrella and facilitated this collaboration. Had they relied on a traditional studio, the creators would have sacrificed significant creative control.

Industry experts believe this model represents a fundamental shift in film distribution. Director Feingold stated that this approach defines independent filmmaking in 2026. He argued that studios would be studying this mobilization strategy for years. If this blueprint proves profitable, more digital creators could bypass conventional distribution entirely. The entertainment industry's established gatekeepers may need to adapt or risk becoming obsolete.
