A mysterious structure on Mars has captured the world's attention this week. The formation, called the Candor Tetrahedron, looks like a three-sided pyramid. It sits in a valley called Candor Chasma, one of Mars's largest canyons. NASA orbiters first photographed the area back in 2001. However, the images recently went viral after a filmmaker shared them online.
The Candor Tetrahedron measures around 290 meters across and 145 meters tall. That makes it roughly the same size as the Great Pyramid in Egypt. It was photographed by NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter using a powerful camera called HiRISE. The region around it contains similar rock formations that scientists call positive relief knobs. These are hard rocks left standing after softer ground was worn away by erosion.
Scientists believe the structure is a fascinating illusion, not an ancient building. Wind, sand, and temperature changes have shaped Mars's rocks over millions of years. The ridges on the formation are uneven, and its three sides are different sizes. Experts say this is an example of pareidolia, which is our brain's tendency to see familiar patterns. If we looked more closely, we would see it is simply a natural geological feature.
This is not the first time people have spotted familiar shapes on Mars. In 1976, a rock formation called the Face on Mars caused similar excitement worldwide. Later photographs proved it was just an ordinary hill shaped by natural forces. These discoveries remind us that human curiosity is a powerful force. Mars may not have pyramids, but its strange landscapes continue to inspire wonder.
